Under the direction of the Director, Veterans and Military Affairs, the Veterans Benefits & Program Counselor is responsible for managing the eligibility provisions of the VA programs available to eligible students and certifying their enrollment to the appropriate VA Regional office where eligibility is established, and payments are processed. Counsel's veterans, service-members, dependents, and survivors concerning eligibility and benefits available to them under the various VA educational assistance programs offered at Mississippi State University. Also monitors academic progress of VA students and obtain approval of all programs and courses from the State Approving agency.
1. Represents Mississippi State University as the VA certifying official and is therefore responsible for certifying appropriate degree enrollment to the department of Veterans Affairs. 2. Serves as a liaison between Mississippi State University and the Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure all paperwork is in order so the eligible VA students get paid in a timely manner. 3. Counsels students and parents concerning their eligibility and benefits available under the VA benefits educational programs. 4. Manages a system to monitor schedule changes, major changes, withdrawals, audits, and inapplicable courses and reports these changes to the Department of Veterans Affairs. 5. Establish and maintain files on VA students for the purpose of compliance surveys (An Audit of VA Records). 6. Correspond with the Student Financial Aid Office concerning benefits being received by VA students. 7. Communicate with VA Regional Office concerning problems with eligibility and certification. 8. Submit to the State Approving Agency all programs and courses of instruction for Mississippi State University. 9. Communicate with departments and advisors concerning degree requirements. 10. Assist in the monitoring of students who have been mobilized and make sure university policies on military withdrawal are being enforced. 11. Serves as scholarship coordinator for the Center of Veterans Affairs.
Bachelor's Degree 2. Strong Interest in Veteran Development 3. Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication skills.
Master's degree in a related field and or experience related GI Bill education benefits.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of the federal and state regulations concerning VA Educational Benefits. 2. Knowledge of the different types of VA Educational Benefits. 3. Strong Computer Skills 4. Knowledge of MSU regulations and policies concerning student financial accounts.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
* Routine deadlines; usually enough lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor; frequent evening and weekend work is required. * Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands. * Job occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 25 pounds. * Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
